Email Newsletters – avoiding the spam bin

24 Apr

In my new job as a web designer, I’ve been asked a couple of times to design and build a template for a customer newsletter. This task differs somewhat from building a web page because of the different ways that email programs deal with HTML (e.g. some delete everything except what’s in the BODY tag, others rename the BODY tag, etc). What makes it even more difficult is making sure your carefully crafted newsletter doesn’t end up in the SPAM folder of half the customers who signed up to receive it. This website gives pointers as to how to reduce the likelihood of this happening (of course, each spam filter is different and can be configured to different thresholds so nothing is guaranteed). It also has a lot of other tips about email marketing (as opposed to spamming!).
